Me & Thee Music
28 Mugford Street, Marblehead, Mass.
What an evening we have planned for you this Friday at the Me&Thee! The nationally acclaimed, Grammy nominated New Black Eagle Jazz Band will fill the Me&Thee with some of the most uplifting traditional New Orleans jazz you’ll ever hear.
For five decades, the New Black Eagles have paid homage to the greatest jazz musicians of the early era including Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington and others but has also developed their own eclectic sound which incorporates old spirituals, popular songs of the 1920’s and 1930’s and even a few songs recorded by Elvis and Bob Dylan.
The seven member band recently played to a full house at the new Groton Hill Music Center and will be playing at the Suncoast Jazz Festival in Clearwater, Florida this fall. They’ve been featured at many of the greatest concert halls and festivals in the world including Newport, Kool, JVC, Tanglewood, Edinburgh, Singapore and New Orleans as well as with the Scottish National Symphony, The Baltimore Symphony and the Boston Pops among many others. They’ve even been featured on the PBS show “This Old House.”
The Black Eagles are now led by Billy Novick (alto sax, clarinet and vocals) who has recorded 16 albums and has been featured on more than 250 recordings and 150 film and television soundtracks. He has also scored two full-length ballets, The Great Gatsby and The Sun Also Rises, which debuted to sold-out shows at the Kennedy Center.
Other members include Stan Vincent, trombone, who is the sole original member of the band, and has played with Gene Krupa, Roy Eldridge, Bobby Hacket. Jeff Hughes, cornet, has played with the Wolverine Jazz Band, The New Yankee Rhythm Kings and the Blue Horizon Jazz Band. Herb Gardner on piano, was a regular at the Metropole in New York City and played for the inauguration of George Bush and Bill Clinton’s victory party.
Bill Reynolds, drums, has played in more than 100 movies and TV soundtracks including Seabiscuit, Eight Men Out, and Sex in the City. Jesse Williams, bass, has recorded two Grammy and six W.C. Handy nominated albums. He’s performed at Lincoln Center and appeared on the Sesame Street TV show.
The New York Times wrote that the Black Eagles were “so far ahead of other traditional bands, there is scarcely any basis for comparison.” We can’t wait for the first down beat! See you Friday at the Me&Thee.

On Saturday, October 7, the Aaron Diehl Trio makes their Symphony Hall debut alongside Nelsons and Buchbinder for Opening Night at Symphony, a celebratory concert that places the Mozart and Beethoven pieces from the prior two nights in conversation with music inspired by Black American musical traditions. Nelsons will conduct two works by legendary jazz pianist, composer, and conductor Duke Ellington: New World A-Coming, played by the BSO and the Aaron Diehl Trio, and Tonk, a piano four-hands piece written with Ellington’s longtime collaborator Billy Strayhorn, performed here by Buchbinder and Diehl side by side. Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances, commissioned by the BSO in 2022 and performed seven times to great acclaim throughout the BSO’s recent European tour, brings the program to what The Times of London called an “irresistibly jubilant” conclusion.

From Austria to America: The program begins with Beethoven’s lively and festive Consecration of the House Overture, commissioned for the city of Vienna. Austrian soloist Rudolf Buchbinder then plays Mozart’s light and lyrical Piano Concerto No. 23, written during the composer’s years in Vienna. Aaron Diehl and his trio bring to life the American master Duke Ellington’s tone poem New World A-Coming. In closing, Carlos Simon, an Atlanta-raised composer, brings us deep into his community’s history with the motley and exuberant Four Black American Dances.
